I fully support 20mph zones and think they have made a notable difference - maybe statistically it would be difficult to prove they have made our local roads safer but they certainly have made them calmer.

However, is easy to loftily dismiss tabloid outrage and mock people who you think have inadequate excuses for exceeding the limit but I think this is risky. As a supporter of the limits I have no problem adhering to them and have devices to help me do so as I drive. Even so, it requires only a moments inattention (to the speedometer not the road) for a vehicles speed to rise above the limit. I've never been done for speeding and hope I never will but I don't drive that often and I think I probably would be if I was regularly on the road.

There is a sort of 21st century Puritanism about some of the reaction to this story which seems to frame the very act of driving as an evil in itself deserving of punishment. The problem I foresee is that as the number of careful drivers who are fined for de minimis offences increases support for 20mph zones will decline and eventually we will end up electing somebody who wants to remove them.
