Getting back to Sandy Brown's initial post and her "it requires a quantum leap of faith by local residents"... Right, I'm not mainstream Putney...more Roehampton. That said I do once or twice a week go there to pick up an Evening Standard from Waitrose or Sainsburys and at the same time buy a few odds and ends from said shops. I park either along the far end of The Embankment where it's free after 10.30am or park in Erpingham Rd (again free after 10.30)...either way it's a schlepp on a chilly rainy late afternoon. Why do I endure this? Because I absolutely refuse to pay £2.60/£2.80ph for parking nearer to The High Street..this assuming one could find anywhere to park anyway! So please Dave Irwin/Putney Society do me a favour and get real. Tart up the High Street until the cows come home. Totally/semi pedestrianise it, plant a few shrubs, re-lay the pavements, remove street furniture...whatever! But the fact is that Putney is competing with Kingston and Richmond both of which are not only accessible but also offer fantastic shopping coupled with loads of realistically priced parking (£1ph in Kingston). Yes, I do applaud your plans and I'm sure that the immediate locals who frequent PHS daily on foot do too, but that'll be just because it'll be a nicer environment for them to visit Waitrose (the only worthwhile shop in Putney), various coffee shops and restaurants or the myriad of estate agents, opticians and phone shops. Rather than tart up the High Street spend your time getting the landlords to lower their rents, the Council to lower their business taxes/parking charges and when that's done go to Kingston, visit some of the quality shops they have there and ask them to consider opening a branch in Putney. |
