Agreed. This would turn the High St into a cyclist's death trap. However, with the addition of dedicated cycle lanes (ie not quite such a big share of the width being given over to pedestrians), it's not such a bad idea. A lot of the posters seem hung up on the idea that because this is a trunk road leading to the bridge, the traffic cannot be reduced. I don't think that is the point. I understand the suggestion to be that the same traffic travel in a single line at a maximum speed of 15 mph. I don't think that will slow anyone down and therefore, I don't think any reduction in traffic (however desirable that may be) is required. Indeed, with no traffic lights and no Tesco vans parking illegally to unload, traffic might even get through more quickly! |
