That was harsh, yes. Any ideas that might improve the high street are a good thing. And the Putney Society is not desperate and absolutely does not need to "justify" its existence to anyone. It's just a group of unpaid local people with a common interest of keeping/making Putney a better place. However, I do tend to agree with Nicholas in so much that this may not be feasible. The High St is busy for one reason - the bridge. And that's not going to move. Unless I'm missing something, how would simply reducing the road lane width suddenly reduce the amount of traffic? We could ban HGVs and deliveries in the daytime (although I thinks most deliveries are already at night), but we could do that regardless and it's not a new idea. The fact remains that this is a main road north/south over the river. Creating wide pavements, no curbs, having trees etc won't make the road less used by vehicles. |
