I don't see how the traffic flow would worsen - if anything, provided the wider pavements incorporated bays that the buses can pull into, it should flow better than it does now. The road outside WH Smith e.g., although wider than two lanes, currently serves no helpful purpose while stopped buses back up everything behind them except for brief passing opportunities. We can have our cake and eat it too - flowing two-way traffic and extra space for pedestrians to walk an arc around the chuggers. I'm no fan of inconsiderate cyclists, but taking to two wheels does take pressure off the roads - we just need cyclists, motorists and pedestrians to work in better harmony, as they do in other European cities where it has been the norm for longer. |
