Rather harsh sentiments Nicholas: It is simple to realise that if you don't like traffic go and live in North Wales. It appears to me that this has been brought about by people who obviously have nothing better to do with their time. The Putney Society appear to be desperate to endorse this ideologically unsound scheme to justify their existence. Firstly we all know that Putney High Street is a thru route for the majority of traffic and yes this has to be addressed in any scheme that will improve the High Street. At least someone (David Irwin, in this case) has taken the time and trouble to provide a starting point. Your solution appears to be just to move away from wherever there is traffic. Not at all realistic imo. Secondly regarding visually impaired people (I am one, although not blind, and more to the point, suffer from deafness too which causes just as many problems) If the pavement is wider and materials are used to indicate where it becomes the roadway I for one would feel safer than I currently do. It would be interesting to learn how the new road layout in Exhibition Road in Kensington is affecting disabled people as this has no definitive stepping of the pavement. I seem to recall that in the past HGV deliveries could only be made at 'unsocial' hours. Why can't we have this system again? I agree it would be hard on the lorry drivers and possibly disturbing for some local residents but there are both advantages and disadvantages to living so close to a town centre like Putney High Street. Finally'people who have nothing better to do with their time'? Not exactly sure what you mean by this derogatory term. The Putney Society (Executive members in particular) is comprised of people who give up precious time of their own. Even some who are retired lead very full lives and devote what spare time they have to help improve life for residents of Putney and Roehampton. What do you do to help your fellow citizens and community, apart from slag others off as in your post, I wonder? The Putney Society has no need to justify their existence to anyone and who are you to ask for it? Even WBC, who I suspect often find the Society a pain in their side, would agree that they serve a very useful purpose within the community. |
