This is a response to Peter Higgins' post of 2nd April:

Peter, in yet another bit of barrel-scraping, you claim that “the closure of Hammersmith Bridge very evidently hasn't led to evaporation.” It’s getting rather tedious to have to explain, yet again, that the closure did indeed lead to traffic evaporation. Freedom of Information request FOI-1103-1920 showed that the 25,000 daily crossings of Hammersmith Bridge before closure were replaced by an increase of only 15,500 on neighbouring bridges after the closure. In other words, 9,500 river crossings evaporated.

 

Even worse is your sleight of hand in claiming that “if you take the proportion of commercial traffic including deliveries, buses, private hire vehicles, cars being driven for business reasons, care worker, cars being driven by people with mobility issues ….there is probably only a small proportion that is genuinely discretionary.” Where is the evidence that the “discretionary” element of the traffic is so high? There isn’t any, it’s just imagination on your part.

 

PS: Your statement that “the reason why the closure of Hammersmith Bridge very evidently hasn't led to evaporation must be down to elasticity of demand” is simply nonsensical. Ignoring the “very evidently”(for which there is no evidence), you apparently don’t understand that it is the elasticity of demand that leads to evaporation.
