I think where Richard and others advocating for continued closure get this wrong is looking at Hammersmith Bridge simply as something that enabled cars to get around. When you believe that is a bad thing then obviously the bridge should remain shut.

However, when the bridge was fully opened, the majority of people crossing (as opposed to vehicles) was on buses. Therefore it was very much an integral part of the public transport network particularly for areas like Barnes and Mortlake which suffer from poor connectivity.

A proportion of those who used to cross the bridge by bus will now be getting to their destination by car.

If a renewed bridge could take the weight of multiple double deckers, the proportion of people using it as part of a public transport network would rise. Modelling these things is complex but at the very worst, the reduction in car journeys due to better public transport options will partly offset the boost in vehicle movements due to the route reopening.
