Well said. I fear, however, that many contributors to this Forum don’t want to choose a side. They wish to express their moral disapproval of both Israel and Hamas. That’s all very well, but moral indignation is no substitute for a solution to the conflict. Israel has no alternative but to remove the threat posed by Hamas. Unfortunately, despite its best efforts, it has no way of doing so without causing civilian casualties. Contributors sitting in the safety of Putney feel they can afford to condemn Israel because they are under no threat themselves. That is a mistake. Any thing other than the removal of Hamas from Gaza and the return of the (surviving) hostages would be a victory for Islamism and a threat to Western democracies everywhere. |
