Biden is simply worried at losing votes from Democrats who sympathise with the Palestinians. As for the future of Gaza, Ganz like everyone else in Israel wants rid of Hamas, but wishes to see Gaza administered by an international force comprising America, Europe, Arab countries and the Palestinian Authority. I don’t think Netanyahu is opposed to this on principle. He is simply fearful that any such group would be unwilling or unable to prevent the resurgence of Hamas. If jihadists start firing rockets into Israel, is it likely that American or European or Saudi troops are going to engage in a firefight with them? That is why Netanyahu envisages retaining military control over Gaza for the foreseeable future. I don’t know whether this is a good idea. Probably not, but what is the solution? |
