| The answer to Robert’s question, Lucille, is that some contributors to the Forum want a ceasefire on humanitarian grounds even if this leaves Hamas in control of parts of Gaza and still holding the hostages. They don’t support Hamas but in effect they are promoting Hamas’ cause. Rather than face this uncomfortable fact, they prefer to employ a variety of strategies. These include silence on key questions, vituperative comments about their opponents (e.g. caricaturing them as people for whom Israel can do no wrong), biased accounts of the history of the conflict and irrelevant references to the admittedly reprehensible behaviour of some of the settlers on the West Bank. |
