Well, as a commercial property services company, one might argue 'they would say that wouldn't they'? I guess they, and their clients, have an interest in propping up rents. If the profitability of high street locations drops, eventually market forces will cause rents to drop too. Isn't that a good thing? I'm all for making sure that online retailers (especially behemoths like Amazon) pay an appropriate amount of Corporation Tax. I'm also in favour of looking at whether the way that Business Rates are calculated needs to be reconsidered given the changing nature of retail. But tinkering with VAT rates doesn't seem to me like the right way of addressing the issue. |
