Why compare PHS with the USA? As you say, "PHS has a lot against it, a polluted, dismal little strip with a steady crawl of traffic." This would not happen in the US as, for one, their roads are very much wider than ours. Why reduce PHS to Lacy Road only, however enchanting, yet small, it may be? Why not divide the HS into different areas, including behind the church, for example? Why not look for examples closer to home? Barnes, Wimbledon, Southfields, Battersea Square, Taunton, Stilton, Wandsford, to name a few? What PHS needs is a lot of character brought back to it. The traffic is a problem obviously, but character, and a welcoming and friendly one at that, can be rectified. How do you solve the problem of PHS being one of the two main roads that exit the A3? By the way, none of the places I mentioned above are exits to an A road or a motorway, however close they may be to one. If the HS is to be divided into different small and welcoming areas, what happens to the empty shops on the HS? Convert them into offices, or residential units? The problem with the latter is that rents are a lot lower for these compared to shops...... I am sure there is a solution somewhere, it is almost in front of our own eyes, and yet we cannot see it....... |
