Radio 5's Wake up to Money segment at crack of dawn this morning had an interview with the boss of Macdonalds UK. He said high business rates and lack of consumer confidence were contributing to the pressures on the high street, but then said his own customers were demanding home deliveries and Macdonalds was considering how to provide this. Presumably this is another reason why people aren't taking themselves to their local shopping streets. But the major problem is online shopping, and until some government does something about the difference in business rates between warehouses and shops, the squeeze on high streets seems irreversible. It worries me because there's some things for which I need a bricks and mortar shop, like one where I can lie on a mattress when I need a new one. But my purchase every ten years or so won't keep anyone in business. |
