Measures to prioritise motor traffic lead to more traffic and congestion - not less. The current situation in Putney High Street is a prime example of the failure of that approach, and doing more of the same will give the same results. Measures to squeeze out local residents and give cars even more space will effectively kill off the high street as a town centre and divide Putney in two. Green walls do look nice, but their impact on air pollution is small. The real answer is to reduce emissions in the first place. We need to do the opposite - widening pavements and encouraging people to walk and cycle. Areas that have done this have seen improvements in air quality, and an increase in retail takings locally.
