The problems PHS have are really three-fold vis: 1) the rise in popularity with on-line shopping, 2) austerity educating people to the fact they do not have to constantly spend money in keeping up with the Joneses and 3) the popularity of easily accessed competition - Southside, Westfield, Wimbledon, Kingston to name just four such places all eminently reachable by car or public transport. If the high street is to survive and thrive what is needed above all are profitable outlets that attract shoppers, not shops weighed down with high business rates and rents, and a local authority that provides actual support. Wider pavements, additional street furniture, pedestrianised days (e.g. two Sundays each month) would all add appeal. Any thoughts? |
