Surely the future of the British High street lies in providing pleasant browsing : Library, bookshop, fresh local produce, bakery, Re-cycling (charity) shops, cafes to work or meet people, pubs, restaurants, seasonal pop-up shops etc. Barnes is well on the way to this, and so, amazingly, is Southfields. Slogging home in the drizzle with toilet rolls and cans of beans is not always fun and many loyal Putney residents probably take the car down to Asda or Tesco or the big Sainsbury's in Wandsworth or Sand's End, whilst bemoaning the lack of shopping on PHS. Or, they are buying basics online. Was it ever really worth a 40 minute round-trip to Maplin for replacement printer ink only to find out that the one you wanted was out of stock? Online is never out of stock. I pray that Putney never loses Waitrose, and can encourage the footfall to that store to linger and browse a little. Gails in Lacy road is a great start.
