In support of this, one of the most common tropes about road space is that there are a fixed number of vehicles and all you have to do to improve traffic flow is to increase the space available for it. But this is a myth - because the level of traffic is not static but dynamic, in that if more space is provided, drivers previously deterred from using their cars will take up the newly-liberated space, reducing congestion to the level it was at before. Consequently, the counter-intuitive solution to congestion is to *reduce* the space available, thus persuading more drivers to leave their cars at home. |
