| Mark I take your point. Indeed the commons levy is collected by the council and handed over to the conservators. There is a body of opinion that thinks that the time for organisations such as the Wimbledon & Putney Commons Conservators is past, and that areas such as Putney Lower Common should be transferred to the local authority which would take over responsibility for managing it, and administer it in the same way as the council looks after its other open spaces, with the safeguards in place to ensure that it remained common land. Campaigners say that it is a long way removed from the centre of Wimbledon Common where the rangers are based and that as a result it does not receive the same level of attention as the main common. If this were the case the long drawn out negotiations over the access rights to the Putney Hospital site would not have been necessary. I would be interested in hearing your views. |
