| Jonathan, your objections to the Ministry of Justice figures are not very convincing in my opinion. What is the importance of the exact number of foreign nationals living in the UK. The point is that they constitute around 10% of the population yet commit around 30% of this particular crime. I am not sure that the nationality of those convicted is particularly important either, but it seems that the most common nationality is Indian, followed by Romanian, Polish, Pakistani and Afghan. As for gender, virtually all sexual assaults are committed by men, while women are four times more likely to be their victims than other men. But again, I fail to see how this undermines the significance of the statistics issued by the Ministry of Justice. It seems to me that the most sensible approach when faced with disquieting evidence of this kind is not to raise somewhat academic objections to the figures, still less to attack those voicing concern, but to accept that there is a problem and try to address the issue. |
