| Jonathan, I don’t understand your point about confirmation bias. The source of the figures on rape and sexual convictions for foreign nationals is not the Centre for Migration Control, which might be accused of bias, but the Ministry of Justice. Ivonne, the point is that the percentage of assaults committed by foreign nationals is disproportionately high. Around 10% of the population are foreigners but they commit around a third of the assaults. Richard, Sweden is currently undergoing a wave of crime committed by migrants, a fact which has become a contentious political issue. But in any case the situation in Sweden is not relevant to the UK. It seems to me that contributors are allowing their ideological convictions to block or otherwise rationalise inconvenient facts. This is exactly what happened in the case of the Pakistani grooming scandal when Labour initially described concern at the abuse of young women as right wing dog whistle politics. The figures suggest that there is a serious problem in this country, in which foreign nationals are disproportionately involved. Is it even a surprise given that many migrants are unaccompanied young men who come from countries where attitudes to women are unacceptable by our standards. |
