Actually, a lot of traffic pollution is very localised as the map produced by the Putney Society showed (see http://www.putneysociety.org.uk/putney_society_images/Air_Pollution_map_Putney_OS_FINAL[1].pdf). The map shows NO2 levels across the centre of Putney measured over a month in Sep/Oct 2011. There can be high levels of background pollution in particulates, some being blown in from across the Channel, but for most of the stuff chucked out by traffic it tends not to drift too far unless we have adverse weather in the form of temperature inversion which traps all the muck close to the ground. The 4% reduction in traffic after Robin Hood Gate closed just suggests to me that people love/need their cars so much they are prepared to spend time finding ways round a blockage just so they can keep on driving. A ban on through traffic would have a greater impact but like all traffic schemes would probably just displace traffic rather than reduce overall volumes. Though as I said before it would certainly make the park even more attractive. |
