With all the warnings I would have thought it best to avoid car use if at all possible. We had an invite to stay with friends near Oxford this weekend but rearranged because there was no way I wanted to spend the day stuck in traffic breathing in someone else's fumes. I think one day a year for an event of this kind is justified if there is sufficient warning given to residents, drivers etc - which there was. There have been road signs in the area and huge illuminated signs on the major roads for several weeks now and plenty in the press, on the radio, TV and so on. The stewards, just as they were last year, are untrained unprepared non-locals on the minimum wage. Some of them were getting serious grief from motorists which is just not on. The organisers could try and improve on that next time. I didn't go into Richmond Park today but I understand it was closed to through traffic and a delight to visit for locals on foot or on their bikes. |
