It is not so much traffic as fossil fuel exhaust that is the problem. I heard on the radio that it will be Liberal Party policy that all cars that burn hydrocarbons will be banned from the public highway from 2040. Too late for the 8,000 people a year dying as a result of London's air pollution however; it does predict the inevitable change that is underway with mass production of fuel cell vehicles that is predicted to gain momentum by 2020. You may recall that Royal Parks closed Robin Hood Gate to traffic and you may have expected a drop in traffic by a sixth. The actual reduction was 4%, increased congestion along Roehampton Lane and no measureable environmental or ecological improvement in the park. If city dwellers crave wide open spaces devoid of traffic, suggestions are to visit the north Norfolk coast or The Highlands. Air movement, polluted or not, cannot be confined. By the way, there was a road race on the A24 yesterday as there are most weeks at this time of year. They are less frequent in the winter months. |
