No; you've misunderstood. You should have heard people re-telling their experiences on the LBC phone-in this morning. Cabbies who couldn't take fares where they wanted to go (giving up and going home), overseas visitors saying they would never come to London again, 1 hour journeys taking 4 hours, etc. A few enjoyed it but on balance, it sounded like an unmitigated disaster for London and London's reputation. If this is to be an annual event, it will have to be far better planned, far better organised and use a different route. No one objects because the Tour de France route changes every year so why can't the bicycle riders be so kind as to consider the majority and reflect on the huge inconvenience their group ride caused. To describe a road as "iconic" is a misuse of the word and sounds like the rubbish that came from the mouth of a GLA official Nick Ferrari questioned; clichés, presumptions and imaginings. Either hold a race or don't hold a race. Giving over London to 0.002% of London's population for a whole day is simply not on. If someone wants to cycle in the park, they can do so any day from dawn to dusk. There is no need or justification for closing most of the bridges and effectively closing down half of London so they can do so en-masse. |
