Yes, most MPs knew, Suzanne, and so did all those really following public events, including me. It all started many years ago when MPs decided against giving themselves more pay, but agreed to extend expenses. No doubt some of them are outrageous, but many not, eg claiming £60 for the cost of a wreath - why not - and there was NO charge for a moat! Worth reading today's Times article about standing for Parliament. Such a time consuming undertaking, standing and then being a member. But I think it a good thing that more of the public are aware of the expenses business, and I think it will be sorted, but ask them if they would like to be an MP. Would you? |
