Yes, I agree with this, although like you I don't know what his duties are. Ultimately, the MPs have claimed stuff they shouldn't have. They are blaming the "system". That excuse is simply not good enough. They are supposed to be "honourable gentlemen". How the Speaker handled the situation is totally irrelevant - it should be treated as a separate argument. I wonder sometimes if the position of Speaker is another of those "men in tights" positions, i.e. totally out of touch and not relevant to modern society. Traditions are wonderful, but I would eliminate all of them overnight if they were getting in the way of important things like running the country. |
