The Speaker should go. [It is still an hour or so to go before he addresses the Commons]. I don't think there should be a General Election. Public opinion is far too fickle, and we need to settle down for a while to gather our senses, and work out our priorities in a more relaxed manner. In the meantime, I hope the worst alleged offenders will resign, or be forced to resign by their constituencies, so that [many?] by-elections can be held, and the new MPs can be seen for what they are worth. And a new Speaker can have the opportunity to oversee a new remuneration package for MPs generally. The worst alleged offenders should be prosecuted quickly. HMRC should investigate all MPs' income tax returns for any associated misdemeanours. Excessive claims should be refunded, with interest, as these constitute loans from the Public Purse. Miscreants with alleged minor misdemeanours will no doubt earn nicknames, in the manner of John 'Two Jags' Prescott. And those thinking about Christmas pantomines will have a field-day for their scripts this coming December. Perhaps even the Mikado can be re-written with Speaker Martin playing the role of the Lord High Executioner? What joys. |
