| As someone who lives in East Putney I've been watching this with interest on the forum and on Next-door. It seems to me that the aims (like the Tooting one) are sensible (reducing rat runs, helping cyclists and pedestrians, etc) but not knowing the road schemes in detail I don't want to comment on it's viability or suitability. What seems apparent from all the posts is the appalling communications and implementation of the scheme. The short notice, confusion caused seems bound to cause objections and, Ed, your recent posts about the contractors getting the signage wrong and having to correct it just highlights further the poor planning and documentation around the scheme. Such schemes can work: I lived and studied in South Kensington in the early 70s. I think what's been done to Exhibition Road and around South Kensington is a superb example of how an area can be improved. (Pity about the blocks they've had to install to stop terrorists though.) So perhaps Wandsworth and others need a rethink on how they plan and communicate? |
