Phillipa, I agree about the help and support.  One of the worst things that happened to us was when the Council system changed and instead of having a social worker that really knew our family, they brought in a sort of central hub, that took your details and passed them onto basically the next social worker available.  Another change that badly effected us, was when Wandsworth stopped using Barnes Hospital.  I believe the hospital is still open, but not to Wandsworth patients.  Instead of being able to use it for respite care, we had to go through the social work system who arranged respite in a care home. The thing that most helped us was my mum being able to attend the Holybourne Day Care Centre, especially on the music day.  It saved us.  Plus having marvellous neighbours on the Crown Court Estate. x
