Gordon Brown sold a vast chunk of our gold reserves at a very low price so I take no notice of anything he says. China  held a massive stock of Treasuries when I worked in NYC  35 years ago when it was nothing like the power it is now, but even then we said, if China wants to stir things, it will dump Treasuries. What is clear is that Trump is not as omnipotent as he claims to be. He can't buck the bond markets, and he's woken up to the fact that US consumers won't be thrilled at having to pay vastly inflated sums for iPads etc, and his Big Tech mates aren't having it either. So I hope Starmer realises that we aren't "special" with a tariff of 10% but also that his bluff can be called. So if it would help our tax take by imposing a tax on Big Tech companies, why not go for it.
