Ed. The GDPR doesn't stop bad software being written or mistakes being made that leak data. However, it does act as an incentive to minimise the risk of those happening because of the threat of financial sanctions. Data Privacy is quite high on the German agenda thanks to the Stasi - when I was doing information security I worked with a German data protection lawyer and the mindset was completely different to that in the UK where data protection is often seen as a nuisance :-)

Yes, perhaps one should be more concerned about Tesla collecting drivers' data ...
