A new study by scientists at the University of Southern California links early exposure to traffic pollution to the risk of children developing autism. The study concluded that the risks were three times more likely, and even for moderately busy roads the risk was doubled. The Lower Richmond Road for traffic purposes is classified as a congested road with over 10,000 vehicles per day, and nose to tail traffic in the morning rush hour. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-20493360 This new health concern adds to the proven links between congested roads and asthma, which were completely disregarded by Wandsworth when choosing to site their proposed school alongside one of the most dangerous and overcrowded roads in the borough. And, it is a further illustrates the irresponsible decision by Wandsworth to not examine carefully the potential impact on the environment, including the risks to young children’s health, before submitting their unlawful planning application. Wandsworth were legally obliged to produce an Environmental Impact Assessment of their proposal but decided not to, on the basis that the impact would be no worse than the health centre (not built) or the derelict hospital (closed for 15 years. By choosing to ignore the law, the applicant, the planners and the planning committee demonstrated both arrogance of planning law, as well as a complete disregard for the health of primary school children. So in addition to the applicant’s and the planners lies over the application, and Wandworth’s threats to the Conservators to compel them to sell the land, they chose deliberately to ignore health impact to primary school children. Because had they done their job thoroughly the site would never been found appropriate to build a primary school. On a separate note I see that Jenny Jones has exposed Wandsworth are “cheating” about their recycling statistics. http://www.london.gov.uk/media/press_releases_assembly_member/news-jenny-jones-am-lambeth-and-wandsworth%E2%80%99s-recycling-claims-are-cheat Should Wandsworth perhaps start to take their environmental responsibilities seriously? Or is it just so easy to ignore planning law, to lie, to cheat? And to get away with it? |
