Tonight's monthly Conservators meeting illustrates both the irony of the their name, and a new low in the hypocrisy of the trustees elected to protect the Wimbledon and Putney Common A request by a cricket club to build a concrete base topped with astroturf gets short shrift, on the basis that the "concrete will be there in 150 years", and the Conservators role is to "to protect the common in its natural state". The cricket club are sent packing, and told to report back with alternative solutions. A planning application from a house adjacent to Putney Heath will be formally opposed by the Conservators, "to protect the loss of the visual amenity to the setting of the Heath". So why did the same Conservators agree to Wandsworth's development of Putney Lower Common, which includes selling the land to Wandsworth so they council can build a 6 metre wide tarmac road, a tarmacked coach turnaround, new ditches and earth moundings, 1.5 metre and 2 metre wide hard surfaced footpaths, (complete with lighting), bollards (that enough bollards, Ed), electronic access barriers as well the removal of trees protected by tree preservation orders? The answer, as regular readers will know is simple... Threats combined with £250,000 in the WPCC bank account. The cricket club and the house on Putney Heath should take note. Offer the Conservators money, if you need their support. * Hypocrisy is the state of promoting or administering virtues or principles, etc., that one does not actually have or is also guilty of violating. Hypocrisy often involves the deception of others and thus can be considered a kind of lie |
