Steve,

It was always my understanding that the UK standards in beef production we higher than those in the EU.  So, why not enter into a trade agreement on this?

What has changed is the stocking density of poultry.  The UK  decrees a maximum broiler stocking density of 39 kg/m2 whike the EU limits remain higher at 42 kg/m2.  UK rules also require strict turnaround times and lighting requirements to minimize footpad dermatitis.

The main discrepancy is the use of pesticides.  While baseline food safety remains aligned, the pace of change and approach to risk assessment and pesticide regulation now differ between the two regions.  Meaning, the UK has freed the restrictions on the use of pesticides (remember the discussion on the use of neonicotinoids?)  The EU does not allow these and has recently introduced stringent regulations on pesticides that harm bees.
