| For those of you who make light of the EU's border controls, I might mention that even humanitarian convoys for Ukraine are faced with huge paperwork challenges. The charity I have volunteered for, Medical Life Lines Ukraine, have worked hard to minimise crossing times, both from the UK to France and from Poland to Ukraine, but getting the paperwork processed in less than three hours is still regarded as a good result. The problem is that even though we are merely transiting the EU we have to complete full inventories of everything entering the EU and everything leaving it. The last convoy took 12 hours to cross from Poland to Ukraine due to documentation problems only the Poles could spot. If we had stayed in the EU, or if we can negotiate a better trade deal than the very poor one Johnston and Frosty delivered, at least we would be able to cross the Channel a bit more quickly. Translate one charity's problems to the movement of our exports and you can see the extent of additional costs our exporters are incurring. So it is no laughing matter! |
