Mr Ixer

'Mr Hawkes,  those donations were to a party, not an individual. A £5M donation to an individual is, surely, different? Mr Farage seems unclear whether this was for his security or a "thank you" for Brexit; to me that seems proof it's the wealth that have gained from Brexit, not the majority of people. Why else would one give a £5M thank you?'

If this money were given to an individual, where is the shame, corruption  or other malfeasance in that ?

Were it to be a personal gift, it's the man's own money and so he can do what he wants with it and give it to whom and for whatever reasons he chooses.

If it's a 'thank you' for Brexit, so what ?

Nobody else's business.

We live in a free country and within legal limits can do what we want with our money.

Perhaps he wants to use it before Labour and the Greens introduce a Wealth Tax ?

Like me, I am sure you hope the starting point for this is just £1 above the assets each of us comfortable Putneyites have worked hard to accumulate.

And surely he also can, within the restrictions of HMRC guidelines regarding doner and recipient, do what he wishes with his money ?

If the money in question were given to a Party, I assume there are guidelines regarding this also which the Electoral Commission (not the Guardian Opinion page) will decide were or were not followed.

'Perhaps I sense some hypocrisy regarding gifts. Obviously, fraud is a different matter.'

Hypocrisy on your part perhaps ?

For do you not find it demeaning to watch Starmer touch his forelock to and kiss the hem of the garment of the German Head of the EU Commission that no one voted for as he tries to deny the Brexit vote in an attempt to wriggle back into the EU without us noticing ?

Why is he doing this ?

'In Q1 2026, UK GDP grew by 0.6% compared with the previous quarter (Q4 2025). Eurozone GDP increased by 0.1%, with Germany growing by 0.3% and France recording no growth. US GDP growth was 0.5%.'

Obviously people of your persuasion are sh!t scared of the support Reform is alleged to be gathering from the working class.

But at least you acknowledge the corruption going on north of the border.
