| I suppose Sands is unlikely to attract a mauvais pensant crowd of right wingers. I rather suspected you would take issue with much of what he said. I find his books such as East West Street fascinating and moving in equal measure. His later books on renegade Nazis are great examples of detailed research and passionate commitment. I met him very briefly last year, talked to him about my trips to Lviv/Lemberg and he recommended an excellent cafe, a beautiful example of pre First World War Viennese style. Which examples are there of the ECHR flouting the will of the British people, or even any decisions of British courts? I am deeply dubious of “the will of the people” as a concept. Opinion polls show constantly shifting opinions and preferences and the will of the people too often turns out to be a projection of a commentator’s strongly held views rather than a reflection of majority opinion in the country as a whole. |
