| Perhaps I am being unfair, Jonathan, but I saw the whole event as a bit of a ‘smugfest’ in which a successful international lawyer tells a bien pensant left of centre audience how lawyers and judges like him are helping to preserve our civil liberties and ensure that ghastly warmongers like Trump and Netanyahu will get their comeuppance. In my opinion both of these justifications are debatable. The European Convention on Human Rights, far from being a guarantor of our civil rights, which in any case have existed in this country for centuries, has been used by activist judges to flout the will of the British people in regards to immigration. And the categorisation of leaders like Trump and Netanyahu as criminals under international law is an excuse for doing nothing to counter the threat from enemies who themselves have no respect for law or democracy.. |
