I seem to be of your generation and was also taught the history of the Middle East in 'RE' and via the Bible, particularly the Old testament. The dwelling place of the Hebrews was not then politicised. However even now I can recall a 10 year old's cynical raising of the eyebrows when our RE teacher told us that Mohamed 'had lead a chaste life up to the age of twenty-five and then a monogamous life with a noble widow, but later held more liberal views and a polygamous life after the age of fifty. He married the young and the old, the widow and the divorcee, the pleasant and the emotional, the daughters of tribal chiefs and freed slaves'. I felt even then that he defined Islamic views on marriage to suit his own desires. I am not sure how many wives British citizens of the Islamic faith are allowed. |
