I was at the rally to save the BSF programme today at Westminster Central Hall. No sign of Cllr McDonnell, or any other of Putney's 17 Conservative councillors - nor the Tory MP. Of course, I wasn't really expecting them to be there - just as I don't really believe they're doing anything behind the scenes to reverse the cuts to Putney schools: this is, I'm afraid, what Conservative governments are about. But it would have been nice, for once, to see the reality live up to the rhetoric of the faux angst and regret local Conservative representatives have expressed to date. There is absolutely no need for BSF to be cut - it's nothing to do with reducting the public deficit or about bureaucracy (which is spin for proper accounting for public money): it's solely about providing a pot of cash to fund so-called "Free" Schools and new wave Academies. We should do right by the schools we have before we start on these bizarre experiments with public money funding private, unaccountable schools. |
