Totally agree, Lucille, and have said so above in this thread. It would seem, however, not everyone agrees: In the Bricks & Mortar Section of today’s Times, there is an article on a new pressure group called “Pensioners for Ground Rent (PGR)”. They are saying that “leaseholders don’t actually mind paying the rent” “that managing agents are the real villains who push-up service charges; that buildings would fall into disrepair; and that elderly voters would suffer if ground rents were abolished because pension funds invest in the sector”. The group’s spokesman isn’t a pensioner, but 46 year old Steve Whybrow, a freeholder of 12 buildings “including blocks of flats, and he is worried that the government’s leasehold reforms could rob him of his retirement income”. I agree with Rachel Maclean, Conservative MP for Redditch, who receives hundreds of letters a day “from leaseholders who have faced bankruptcy or losing their home because of escalating ground rents.” She says “This is human misery on a massive scale”. I know that Redditch has a lot of new build housing, so this doesn’t surprise me. |
