I attended the Open Meeting last night and on the whole felt it was a good meeting. It was ably chaired by Prue Whyte, the sound system was fine, the room was full and the Golf Club was a comfortable venue. I was very glad that there was the opportunity for matters other than the Putney Hospital saga to be discussed. To begin with the latter as of course Putney Hospital did come up. Nick asked his questions as he has already stated, but this meant that he had used up his “ration” of thee questions at the outset and, when he attempted to speak again later, voices from the floor told him to “sit down”, which I thought was a bit unfair. However this probably reflected the general feeling that some people are getting bored with all the bickering. Robin Touquet a previous Conservator asked about the commissioning of the Montagu Evans QSR at a cost of £25.000 without the authorisation of the Board. I do not think that this has been satisfactorily  answered and feel that the Charity must have been slipshod in drawing up the terms of reference for the Audit Sub-cttee, which I gather allowed this to happen. Jonathan Callaway posed an interesting question about the possible “conflicting” of the three appointed Trustees who were members of the Board when the price of the easement was fixed. Possibly this needs to be looked into by the Charity Commission. It is to be noted that, in their letter, the Charity Commission expressed concerns about the difficulties which the Charity is experiencing being fought out in the public arena. To quote:”I am aware of and would describe some postings on the site 'Putney SW15' as being inappropriate”. I mentioned this issue at the meeting in connection with Nick Evans, as he is no longer a conservator, being able to represent the views of  himself, John Cameron and Shirley Gilbe, whereas the conservators themselves are under an obligation to remain silent – although I note that John Cameron does not seem to feel that this applies to him. Having said all this, it was good that several other Commons issues were raised from the floor and discussed. One theme was the competing needs of users of the commons – riders, dog walkers, cyclists and pedestrians. Another was illegal parking of camper vans in which people seem to be living. Simon Lee acknowledged that parking generally is a problem and that, maybe, charges will have to be introduced. We were also given reports on the progress of the day to day work which goes on in maintaining the Commons and requests for more volunteers were made. So it wasn't all squabbling and now I think we should, as asked by the Charity Commission, let the Board sort out their problems. Jonathan Callaway asked that the levy payers should receive regular updates on progress with the Action Plan and this appeared to be accepted. So let's have a rest on the Forum and let them get on with it.
