| Recent polling has found that over 3 million Britons want all Jewish presence in the Middle East eliminated through mass expulsion and a similar number say that the October atrocity was ‘justified’. In my opinion the frightening rise in antisemitism is fuelled by media coverage of the conflict in Gaza, notably by the BBC. BBC correspondents in Israel only ever seem to interview right wing extremists like Daniella Weiss, who has several convictions for obstruction and assault. They never seem to speak to ordinary Israelis who just want to live safe from attack in their own country. In contrast the BBC to my knowledge have never interviewed a Hamas supporter in Gaza. The people whom their reporters choose for interview always disclaim any knowledge of Hamas and accuse Israel of unprovoked aggression. The impression given is that Israel is filled with warmongers, while Gaza is peopled entirely by innocent civilians. This kind of journalism is biased and misleading. Fanatical settlers are not representative of the Israeli population as a whole, while the Palestinians are not all as depicted. Who were those civilians rejoicing wildly on October 7 when the half naked German- Israeli girl, who had clearly been raped, was paraded on the back of a truck through the streets of Gaza? It should be remembered that Hamas are not just a terrorist organisation. They are a political party who won an election in 2006 and have administered Gaza ever since. |
