As far as I am aware, WW2 was fought in a few fronts. The principal belligerents were the Axis powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan—and the Allies—France, Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, and, to a lesser extent, China. All of the troops were wearing very identifiable uniforms. The latter is not the case with extremists/terrorists. This is a very difficult war to fight for this very reason! The Hamburg bombings were organized by the Allies and, in this case, carried out by Great Britain and the USA. I understand it was called Operation Gomorrah. I expect that the populations of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Poland, Greece plus others must have been rather relieved. |
