George's comment bears a remarkable resemblance to an even more offensive version that formed part of the club's submission that accompanied the planning application. George, you may well find the provision of "unlovely" council housing far more distasteful than overbearing advertising hoardings, but people - human beings - live in those council homes and they have as much right to a decent quality of life as you do. The council estates to the west of Rosslyn Park benefit not in the slightest from the presence of this club. Rosslyn Park's so-called outreach appears to exclude these two council estates. Why is that? They are among the areas that could benefit most from having this club on their doorstep. They do however suffer from the parking stress of visitors, the intrusion of the floodlights and the noise of the supporters (on top of just losing their garages to luxury housing without, again, any quid pro quo). Some of us would be far more inclined to overlook the garishness of these illuminated signs if the club actually gave the stuff about its neighbours it claimed to in its application. And putting aside your attitude to council housing - which, alas, you are far from unique in holding the other remarkable thing you seem to be saying is "the place is a dump so it's ok to make it worse." Sorry. No. Some of us want to improve Roehampton - yes, even north Roehampton for want of a better description of the area. Rosslyn Park is an important part of it and none of us wants to see it go out of business. It's a shame, however, that the club evidently does not share the same commitment to an improved environment because if it had it would have worked far harder with JC Decaux to provide appropriate scale advertising, possibly - even - more of it around their site (including Roehampton Lane) rather than going for the biggest, ugliest, greediest hoarding they were offered. That said, the horse has bolted. But the club could do a lot more than simply drum up its members to pack this thread with supportive brays. Actually improving the "shabby Upper Richmond Road side of the ground" would be one. Including the community - the WHOLE community - would be another. Let's hope they seize the opportunity. |
