The way some people are carrying on you would think these signs have been put up in the middle of Richmond Park, not on a dreary stretch of the South Circular abutting a sports ground that is already fringed with much tackier advertising boards. The backdrop is not Barnes Common on the other side of the road, but instead blocks of unlovely twentieth-century council flats, and some recent uninspired and expensive houses marketed to offshore buyers. The road itself is a continual procession of cars, buses and giant HGVs because it's a major London traffic artery. My house overlooks the ground, and I have a sideways view of the larger sign. It bothers me not at all. In terms of light pollution the modern block of the Roehampton Club makes a far greater impact, but its architecture is a pleasing element of the urban landscape. It's nonsense to claim that nobody was told. Everyone in the vicinity was given the chance to meet Rosslyn Park's top brass, examine the plans and ask questions. There was no secrecy. The billboards will bring in the money the club needs to turn the shabby Upper Richmond Road side of the ground into something much more appealing, and good luck to them. I can think of many things that are really worth protesting about. Not this. |
