my Nan lived in her flat on Carslake Road from brand new and moved to a smaller flat on Carlton Drive in the mid 80's then bought it and sold it when she retired to Worthing. My own first Putney purchase was an ex council flat on Upper Richmond Rd. Both purchases were life changing for each of us but I would assume my Nan (and I to a certain extent), would not have expected to have seen the lowest period of social house building in history, the commoditisation and fetishism of property ownership, the emergence of London as the worlds first city, almost 20 years of mass, unaccounted immigration, all of which have created the "ethnic cleansing" of many working class folk from Putney and many other areas. Of course there are many other complexities to add, however the lack of building social housing combined with the other factors has been critical. The current issue that gets my goat though is the inexorable contsruction of the yuppy flat - not a square inch is missed by WBC, whilst the nurses and posties are supposed to live where exactly? |
