A great many council tenants buy on the RTB scheme then wait the necessary - it used to be 3 years. Then they sell up and scarper off to greener pastures outside London. This is how I bought my place, on the open market, but I was never a council tenant. However I could not afford any more than a 'studio', ie, bedsit otherwise. Suited me very well, although if my place was still council, I would come into the bedroom tax bracket. So the ex-council tenants went off happy and their old place went into private hands on the open market and has increased in value along with the rest of the market. Although it has suited me very well, I don't think it helps at all for housing in general. |
