Maybe it's because as we are part of the EU asylum seekers/refugees from terror are allowed to travel within the borders after arriving at the nearest safe country to their domicile. I agree we shouldn't allow Merkel to dictate the numbers we take but bear in mind that countries like Italy are taking the initial brunt and it is easy to move from Italy to Germany so no doubt Merkel feels we could be doing more. It isn't a matter of size of the country but the support system required and I agree ours is stretched beyond belief. However Germany already appear to be taking the largest share 'Germany reported the largest number of immigrants (592 200) in 2012, followed by the United Kingdom (498 000), Italy (350 800), France (327 400) and Spain (304 100).'
